iMovie Studio Controller
Overview
Control iMovie 10.4.4 from your Stream Deck: 135 commands on 9 category keys, plus 6 dials that jog the playhead, trim the clip, ride its volume, zoom the timeline and hop markers. Every shortcut is read from iMovie itself, so the deck sends what iMovie is already listening for.
NINE CATEGORY KEYS, THE WHOLE COMMAND SET
Transport, Navigate, Select, Edit, Audio, Adjust, Mark, View and Project. One key per category opens its page, so the whole catalogue reaches your deck without filling it. Every key is remappable in the property inspector and Multi Action ready.
EVERY COMMAND, INCLUDING THE ONES WITH NO MENU ITEM
The shortcuts come from iMovie's own command set and its live menu bar. That includes the 60 commands iMovie ships with no menu item at all, which is most of the transport vocabulary: the J, K and L shuttle keys, edit point and marker hops, frame and ten frame steps, and the selection range keys. Those are the ones you cannot click for.
SIX DIALS
6 dials put the parts you hold onto the encoders.
Filmstrip Browser steps the playhead between real edit points, one per detent, and moves a whole clip at a time when you turn faster. Press selects the clip under the playhead.
Playback Shuttle has stop in the middle: each click right plays one speed faster forward, each click left one speed faster back, and turning back toward the middle slows down and stops. Press stops. Tap the strip to play or pause.
Clip Trim works the clip you have selected: turn right and it takes the clip's start, turn left and it takes the end, and each detent moves that edge a frame. It starts by pulling the edge in to shorten the clip; press the dial and it pushes the edge out instead, for when a cut went too far. Turn faster for a larger nudge. Tap the strip to open the clip trimmer.
Clip Volume raises and lowers the clip's own level, not the system volume. Press mutes it.
Timeline Zoom zooms in and out, and a faster turn changes clip height instead. Press fits every clip.
Marker Hop moves between markers. Press drops a new one.
On the other four dials, a strip tap does what the press does.
The Stream Deck + XL seats all six. The Stream Deck + has four encoders and seats Filmstrip, Shuttle, Trim and Volume; Zoom and Marker Hop ship as keys on that deck instead.
T9 KEYBOARD
Type clip and project names from the deck, phone style: tap 2 for a, again for b, then c. A Mode key turns it into a plain number pad and the faces swap to show which you are in. It types into whichever iMovie field has focus. It fills the left of the Stream Deck + XL hub and has its own page on the Stream Deck and Stream Deck XL.
SIX BUNDLED PROFILES, ALL 135 COMMANDS IN EVERY ONE
Stream Deck (16 pages) opens on a nine door hub and gives each category its own page, with a second page where a category runs past the grid. Stream Deck XL (11 pages) and Stream Deck + XL (10 pages) open on the same hub, and each category fits on one page of their wider grids. The smaller grids chain their pages with Next and Previous instead: Stream Deck + (23 pages), Stream Deck Neo (23 pages) and Stream Deck Mini (34 pages).
EASY LINK
Hold the Easy Link key about a second with iMovie in front and the deck binds it to this plugin's profile, which switches in when iMovie takes focus and hands your previous profile back when you leave. A short press does nothing, so a stray tap never relinks.
SETUP
Click OK when macOS asks to let Elgato Stream Deck control System Events. Accessibility has no prompt: add Elgato Stream Deck under System Settings, Privacy and Security, Accessibility, then quit and reopen the Stream Deck app.
Keys send only while iMovie is in front. Otherwise nothing is sent and the key says so.
Press feedback ships with 19 bundled sounds. The keyboard chirps on every key so you can type without looking down; one switch quiets it.
Newest block first. The header above the first --- fence must name the manifest's current
Version, and the block below that fence is what gets pasted into the Console Release Notes
field: plain text, 1500 characters hard limit. Keep ~10 characters of paste-noise headroom and
target 1490 exceptions/submission.md, "Handling notes"). tests/listing-counts.test.ts reads
exactly that block, so the fence layout is load bearing. Release notes are required even for an
initial release.
Same house rules as the description body: no em-dash, no AI-slop phrasing, no word that only
makes sense on the other platform.
S3, 2026-09-22: the touch-strip sentence was removed here for the same reason it was removed from
the description body. The six iMovie dials use the stock $A1 layout and nothing calls
setFeedback for them, so there is no position counter to announce. The tap is real and is what
this block states.
