Shotcut Edit Deck

Shotcut video editor on Stream Deck, for Windows and Mac: keys that show Shotcut's real state, dials that show where you are, a scrub bar with your clips, markers and playhead, and a bench page for each Shotcut layout that follows Shotcut. 188 commands and seven dials.

ONE SETUP STEP: RESTART SHOTCUT ONCE

The lit keys, the dial readouts, the scrub bar and the 13 keys for commands with no shortcut run through a small helper file the plugin puts in Shotcut's folder. Shotcut reads it only when it starts, so after installing, close Shotcut and open it again once. Until then every shortcut key works.

ON A MAC

The Stream Deck app needs two macOS permissions to type into Shotcut: Accessibility, and control of System Events. Allow them with a real mouse or keyboard. If a key does nothing, turn Stream Deck on in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility, and under Automation. The Notes and Files keys need Shotcut's menus in English.

WHAT THE PLUGIN PUTS ON YOUR COMPUTER

- The helper: a pathfinder-shotcut-edit-deck folder in extensions/filters under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Meltytech\Shotcut, or ~/Library/Application Support/Meltytech/Shotcut on a Mac.

- A token that pairs the plugin with the helper, and each deck's dial choices: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Pathfinder\shotcut-edit-deck, or ~/Library/Application Support/pathfinder/shotcut-edit-deck.

- While Shotcut is open, a small process (PowerShell, or AppleScript on a Mac) reads Shotcut's layout setting so the deck can follow it. It changes nothing.

- To remove: click Remove under Shotcut bridge in any key's settings, then delete both folders, before uninstalling.

HOW IT WORKS

Most keys send Shotcut's own keyboard shortcuts. Eight stay lit while their state is on: Snap, Ripple, Ripple All Tracks, Ripple Markers, Play / Pause, Mute Track, Hide Track and Lock Track. Seventeen (the six layouts, trims, nudges, markers and Split) act through the helper, so they work with Shotcut in the background, and type their shortcut while the helper is off. Most keys notice a shortcut you remapped in Shotcut and use the helper instead.

NO SHORTCUT IN SHOTCUT

Detach Audio, Rejoin Next Clip, Align To Reference, Apply Copied Filters, Copy Current Filter, Paste Filters, Mute Other Tracks, Hide Other Tracks, Loop Selection, Loop Around Cursor, Loop All, Reset Layout To Default and Speech To Text. They act on what is selected and alert when Shotcut is not connected.

DIALS AND THE SCRUB BAR

Jog (a frame per click, shows the timecode), Seek (1, 2, 5 or 10 seconds per click, press for the next step), Timeline Zoom (press to fit), Timeline Scroll (pointer over the timeline), Track Height, Marker and Clip Edge (to the next edit point, press to split). The top of the touch strip is one scrub bar across the dials: the current track's clips, markers, loop and playhead. Tap it to jump there. Pick its color and clip names in the Jog Dial's settings, per deck.

WORKBENCHES

A bench page for each Shotcut layout: Logging, Editing, FX, Color, Audio and Player. Switch layout in Shotcut and the deck turns to that bench; turn to a bench on the deck and Shotcut switches too.

SIX PROFILES

- Stream Deck, Stream Deck XL and Stream Deck + XL: a hub of the 14 categories and all 188 commands; the XL hubs add 16 and 20 everyday commands, the Stream Deck + XL six dials.

- Stream Deck +: four dials and six starter keys.

- Stream Deck Mini and Stream Deck Neo: seven and fourteen cutting keys.

- Every profile adds the six bench pages.

Easy Link sits on the first key: hold it about a second with Shotcut in front and the profile follows Shotcut. 33 optional key sounds.

REQUIREMENTS

Shotcut 26.9.27 on Windows 10 or newer, or 26.9.28 on macOS 13 or newer, and the Stream Deck app 6.9 or newer. On other Shotcut versions the keys still send their shortcuts. Dials need a Stream Deck + or Stream Deck + XL. Shortcut keys go to the window in front.

Version 2.0.0.0 runs on Mac too: one plugin for Windows 10 or newer (Shotcut 26.9.27) and macOS 13 or newer (Shotcut 26.9.28). Restart Shotcut once after this update: the plugin rewrites its helper file, and Shotcut loads it only when it starts.

On a Mac, allow Stream Deck under Privacy & Security > Accessibility and Automation, using a real mouse or keyboard.

Updating from 1.0: the Stream Deck app keeps old profiles, so to get the bench pages delete the Shotcut Edit Deck profiles there; it offers the new ones when you next add a Shotcut Edit Deck key or Easy Link brings Shotcut in.

Workbenches: a bench page for each Shotcut layout (Logging, Editing, FX, Color, Audio, Player). Switch layout in Shotcut and the deck follows; turn to a bench on the deck and Shotcut follows.

Scrub bar: on the Stream Deck + and Stream Deck + XL, the top of the touch strip shows the current track's clips, markers, loop and playhead. Tap it to jump there. Pick its color and clip names in the Jog Dial's settings, per deck.

Dials: Jog shows the timecode, Timeline Zoom the zoom; Seek steps 1, 2, 5 or 10 seconds, press for the next step. Pressing Jog folds the bar away. New Clip Edge Dial: turn to the next edit point, press to split.

Seventeen keys (layouts, trims, nudges, markers, Split) act through the helper, so they work with Shotcut in the background. A key whose shortcut you remapped in Shotcut uses the helper instead of a dead chord.
